About Us

Hello from our staff!

Sheshatshiu Innu School is a brand new K-12 facility located in the heart of our community. Its state-of-the-art capabilities include an enormous gymnasium, 2 industrial arts rooms, a 160-seat cafeteria, an adjacent home economics facility, a modern music centre, an ultra-modern science lab and an all-grade art room. Aside from these educational staples, we are able to boast several notable features.

We are especially proud of our Innu cultural/curriculum development centre. We are also proud of our exceptional technology profile, with ultra-modern Smart Boards (c) in every classroom and Apple technology with wireless internet throughout the building. Our staff of about 60 people would love to meet you!

Our Community

Sheshatshiu is a small Innu community conveniently located about 30 km of paved highway from the central Labrador community of Goose Bay. Sheshatshiu sits at the extreme western end of Lake Melville. It closely neighbours the town of Northwest River, NL. The population of Sheshatshiu is about 1500 people. The great majority of the residents are Innu. Generally, our community is very young, with most of our residents (92%) under the age of 50, and 49% under the age of 18.

English as a second language

With such a young population, our school necessarily assumes an important role in the community. Our students speak their mother tongue, Innu-aimun (Ee-nooh Ay-moon), at home and at school. Our school board offers a conversational Innu-aimun program for all employees. The language of instruction remains English, as most students are fluently bilingual.

Cultural Values

Sheshatshiu Innu School adheres to provincial curriculum standards. However, traditional values and knowledge, Innu-eitun, are taught & fully endorsed whenever possible.

Ultra Modern

Our students benefit from world class facilities and modern teaching methods.
