The following legend was told to the Sheshshatshiu Innu School Grade 7 class by Penote Antuan (photo) as told to him by his mother, Maggie Antuan.

“Wolverine Invited the Birds to the Drum Dance”

Wolverine called up the ducks, geese and a loon and he told them there is going to be a drum dance tonight.  So that evening every bird came to the tent ready for the dance.

The wolverine told all the birds to close their eyes while they were circling around dancing.  There were a lot of ducks at the beginning but the loon opened one of his eyes and saw there weren’t as many ducks as there were before.  He looked at Wolverine who was picking out thE ducks and twisting their necks one by one.  The loon shouted to the other ducks that Wolverine tricked us!

So everyone ran out and only the loon was left behind.  Wolverine grabbed his tail feathers and pulled them off.  That is why the loon has no tail feathers.
